ABSTRACT The particle sensing field of an electrical analyzer is focused by use of pairs of electrodes positioned across the path of particle flow. The electrodes are oriented and/or energized so that their electrical fields bulge outward in the direction of the sensing field to narrow the width of the sensing field along the predetermined path. The electrode arrangements can be implemented in a flow cell, with or without a sensing aperture, or on the surface of a substrate.
