ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Display apparatus includes first and second liquid crystal cells each comprising opposed trans- parent plates and a twisted nematic liquid crystal material disposed between the plates. Molecules of the liquid crystal material are aligned in the absence of a field to rotate the plane of polarization of plane polarized light passing through the material through a predetermined angle. First and second elec- trodes are disposed in association with respective plates in contact with the liquid crystal material. The first electrode comprises a linearly-extending impedance portion disposed adjacent one side of one of the plates and a plurality of substantially low impedance, conductive portions of predetermined width electrically connected to and transversely extending from different locations of the impedance portion. The low impedance portions are separated by intervals of predetermined width. The second electrode has sub- stantially low impedance portions and extends in association with the surface of the other of the plates substantially coextensive with and opposite to the low impedance portions of the first electrode. Voltages are applied to the first and second electrodes. The first liquid crystal cell has the low impedance portions of its first electrode extending in one direction and the second liquid crystal cell has the low impedance portion of its first electrode extending at an angle to those of the first electrode of the first liquid crystal cell. First and second light plane polarizers transmit plane polarized light in one plane and block plane polarized light in another plane disposed at an angle to the one plane. The liquid crystal cells are disposed between the polarizers.
