ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Disclosed are field sensitive optical displays, and arrangements and methods for inducing fields in the displays and for scanning the displays. One or both of the electrodes includes an impedance portion, disposed in a non-active region of the display. A plurality of conductive elements extends to an active region, each conductive element being in contact with a different location on the impedance portion. Only two terminals are required for the impedance electrode. Devices with different arrangements of such electrodes provide a plurality of displays by utilizing relatively simple addressing and scanning arrangements. Various display patterns, such as a movable dot, intersecting lines, and a pivoting line, can be obtained.
