Abstract A method of forming substantially continuous filaments having delayed wettability, in that the filaments are not wettable by water upon their formation but become wettable within from about three hours to about 30 days thereafter without any post-formation treatment, which method involves the steps of (1) ? melting a mixture consisting of a thermoplastic polyolefin, an additive, and a retardant coadditive; (2) extruding the resulting molten mixture through a die (3) contacting the filaments with a quenching fluid; (4) entraining and drawing the filaments in a nozzle with an attenuating liquid having a defined linear speed; and (5) collecting the drawn filaments. The additive is a defined polysiloxane polyether which is present in an amount of from about 1.8 to about 3.0 percent by weight, based on the amount of thermoplastic polyolefin. The retardant coadditive is a high surface area particulate inorganic or organic material which is capable of being at least partially coated by the additive. The filaments canbe collected as tow or can form the basis of a nonwoven web which is charac- terized by minimal filament-to-filament fusion bonding. The preferred thermo- plastic polymers are polyolefins, with the most preferred polyolefin being polypropylene. - 37 -
