In order to transfer a series of data files between two computers, each computer is provided with a file transfer mechanism. The file transfer mechanism is responsible for the overall control of the transfer of the series of files. Each file transfer mechanism controls the transfer of a series of files in accordance with a protocol. In this protocol, the computer receiving data files (the initiator) sends a poll request message (40) to the computer transmitting the data files (the responder). In response, the responder sends a reply message (42) to the initiator containing a list of files which are available for transfer. From this list, the initiator selects the files which it wishes to receive and then copies each file in turn. It then sends an acknowledge (48) to the responder.

Afin de transférer une série de fichiers de données entre deux ordinateurs, on dote chaque ordinateur d'un mécanisme de transfert de fichiers qui est responsable de la commande globale du transfert de la série de fichiers. Chaque mécanisme de transfert de fichiers commande le transfert d'une série de fichiers conformément à un protocole selon lequel l'ordinateur recevant les fichiers (le déclencheur) envoie un message (40) d'interrogation à l'ordinateur transmettant lesdits fichiers (le répondeur). En retour, le répondeur envoie un message de réponse (42) au déclencheur contenant une liste des fichiers disponibles pour le transfert. Le déclencheur choisit dans cette liste les fichiers qu'il souhaite recevoir, copie chaque fichier l'un à la suite de l'autre, puis envoie un accusé de réception (48) au répondeur.
