The invention relates to a filling compound for filling the interstices between a plurality of wires of a conductor, said filling compound comprising a polymeric compound which has a 100 gram needle penetration value between 50 and 100 tenths of a millimeter at 25°C and particles of a water swellable material having a particle size not greater than 200 microns. The invention also relates to a cable containing the filling compound and a method for making same. The filling compound enables production of electrical cables with improved resistance to ingress and movement of water between and around the wires of an electrical cable conductor.
