4 Abstract Balls of expanded metal, in particular expanded aluminum, the balls having an essentially smooth outer surface and having internal coarse pores, are provided as a filling material to fill containers for combustible liquids or gases in order to suppress explosions. The thickness of the aluminum foil lies preferably between 60 and 80 µm. To produce the balls, a band of expanded metal, in particular expanded aluminum, is rolled together into a tubular form in the longitudinal direction, and the thus produced tube of expanded metal is cut into hollow cylindrical pieces, whereupon balls are formed from the hollow cylindrical pieces.
