A sensor for indicating depth of waste material in a holding tank has an elongate sensing member in the form of a non-conductive pipe arranged to be inserted into the holding tank through a lid of the holding tank so as to extend to a position at or adjacent the bottom of the tank. Inside the pipe is a conductor which communicates current to a series of contacts on the outside of the pipe defined by clamped collars on the pipe. The contacts are connected to an electrical resistance sensing array which communicates a current which varies depending on the number of contacts submerged to a sensor module and a display arranged to be located in a building adjacent the holding tank receives the output therefrom and decodes the information to illuminate selected ones of a row of LEDs to indicate the depth. An exterior signal can be communicated to a remote location by telephone dial-up module.
