A film element for absorbing tensile forces wherein the film element has at least one film layer with at least one zone of weakening. The zone of weakening extends in the direction of action of the tensile forces and reduces local stress peaks under load. The zone of weakening may comprise one or more longitudinal slots that prevent tears in one layer from spreading through to other layers. A tear on the edge of a layer will propagate until it reaches the zone of weakening, at which point the tear will be prevented from propagating as the stress peaks are dissipated by the zone of weakening.
