ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: A modified regenerated cellulose film comprising regenerated cellulose and certain modified starches is clear and transparent and has substantially the same mechanical and optical properties as conventional unmodified regenerated cellulose films. Furthermore, the impermeability to gases is fully retained and the film is more biodegradable than conventional films of regenerated cellulose. The modified starches used are starches degraded by oxidation and/or hydrolysis, uncrosslinked ethers or esters of starch or of starches degraded by oxidation and/or hydrolysis or mixtures thereof. The amount of modified starch used represents 1 to 49% by weight, preferably 5 to 30% by weight, based on the total weight of cellulose and modified starch. Methods for the production of said modified regenerated cellulose film either by the viscose process or by the cuprammonium process are also described.
