ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A filter malfunction detector particularly suitable for use in or with internal combustion engines. Dirt can cause serious damage to working parts of internal combustion engine and it is therefore important to be able to detect a filter malfunction directly it occurs. Known malfunction detectors measure differential pressure between the inside and outside of the internal combustion engine system, but can generate mis- leading signals. According to the invention, a detecting means is interposed between a conventional filter and an internal combustion engine, and includes an inertial separating means adapted to remove stray particulate matter from the gaseous stream that has avoided entrapment in the filter due to a malfunction of the filter. Sensing means are connected to the inertial separating means to sense the presence or absence of particulate matter in the inertial separating means.
