Abstract The filter material with a three dimensional, open pore network type of structure for filtering soot particles out of hot gases is comprised of fibres or a framework (18) that is resistant to high temperatures and can be electrostatically charged. The network type of structure is in the form of foam, porous sintered bodies, fibre webbing, knitted fibres, fibre meshes, fibre felts or loose fibre strings. It is made up of electrically conductive fibres, electrically non-conductive fibres with an electrically conductive coating (20), an electrically conductive framework (18) or a framework (18) of electrically non-conductive ceramic with an electrically conductive coating (20). An electrically conductive surface of the network type of structure of a filter is preferably coated with a thin insulating layer (22). The filter material is principally used in diesel soot filters. (figure 3).
