ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to filter presses of the kind comprising a plurality of separate filter plates which are supported by a frame so as to form a stack at one end of the frame during a filtering operation, and which are movable one by one towards the opposite end of the frame to enable filter cakes to be removed from between the plates. A reciprocating carriage moves across the space between the stack and the other end of the frame. The end-most plate in the stack which is not be moved is held in place by a pawl. The carriage displaces the pawl to engage with the next plate in the stack and then picks up the end-most plate and displaces it to the other end of the frame, once in each cycle.
