A catheter (200) for retrieving a filter (368) fixed to a guidewire (350) disposed within a blood vessel (370) in accordance with the present invention includes an elongate shaft (202) and a housing (224) fixed to the elongate shaft proximate a distal end (208) thereof. A tip member (236) is slidingly disposed within a cavity defined by the housing. In a preferred embodiment, the tip member (236) is configured such that the housing is substantially centered about the guidewire. In another preferred embodiment, the tip member (236) is slidingly disposed within the housing, and the tip member may be moved between a first portion and a second position.
