A filter sector for use in rotary disc filter systems. The filter sector includes a pair of spaced-apart metallic structural members formed of expanded metal having a plurality of openings and a non-metallic coating covering the metallic structural members. The filter sector may also include reinforcing ribs, a frame, a mechanism for attaching the filter sector to a rotary disc filter system, and a mechanism for attaching a filter bag to the filter sector. additionally, the structural members may be formed of a nonmetallic or metallic material where the structural members are permanently or removably attached to the filter sector frame.
