In a filtering apparatus (10) and a filtration process for separating undissolved components from a flowable sample, a filtrate is produced by retaining the undissolved components from the sample. The filtering apparatus (10) has sample supply means via which the sample passes to a filtering medium (7; 7a), filtrate discharge means, a fixedly mounted first filter cell portion and a movable second filter cell portion, between which the filtering medium (7; 7a) is located during operation. The first filter cell portion is in the form of a pressing table (4) having a support surface (42) for the filtering medium (7). The second filter cell portion is in the form of a ram (1) which presses the filtering medium (7) against the pressing table (4) before it comes into contact with the sample and in so doing at least partially compacts the filtering medium (7; 7a) in the area of contact between the ram (1), the filtering medium (7; 7a) and the pressing table (4).
