ABSTRACT Filtration apparatus includes a layer of a porous elastomeric material which is mounted so as to be expandable on the application of fluid pressure to one side thereof. Liquid to be filtered enters an inlet, passes through the material and out through a port which is provided on the opposite side of the layer to the inlet port. During filtration solid collects on the inlet side of material. After a filt- ration operation expansion fluid may be supplied through a fluid inlet and causes the material to balloon outwardly thus causing solid to be removed therefrom. Additionally, the pores in the material are expanded on the application of the expansion fluid pressure so that any solid material trapped in the pores is blown out. The fluid pressure used to expand the material may be a fluctuating pressure. The apparatus is particularly useful for the filt- ration of liquids containing fine particulate radio- active solids.
