A method and apparatus for processing the images of fingerprints, whereby aligned images are subjected to a tessellation process, wherein each image is partitioned into a number of regions. Within each region at least one parameter associated with the ridges is measured and stored: the prevailing ridge orientation, the average ridge separation and the phase of the ridges. The data is projected and stored in a multidimensional coordinate system wherein the represen-tations of any two data are separated by an amount corresponding to the dissimilarity of these data.

L'invention concerne un procédé et un dispositif de traitement d'images d'empreintes digitales, dans lequel des images alignées sont soumises à un traitement de structure en mosaïque, chaque image étant divisée en plusieurs régions. Dans chaque région, au moins un paramètre associé aux crêtes est mesuré et stocké: l'orientation dominante des crêtes, la séparation moyenne des crêtes et la phase des crêtes. Ces données sont projetées et stockées dans un système de coordonnées multidimensionnel dans lequel les représentations de deux données quelconques sont séparées selon une valeur correspondant à la dissimilitude de ces données.
