A fire ant trap having a stand comprising at least one prong for penetrating the surface of a fire ant mound and for supporting the trap above the mound. The fire ant trap also comprises an actuator assembly mounted atop the stand. The actuator assembly has a stalk member connected to the prong at a first end thereof and extending into a stem-like member at a second end thereof. The actuator assembly also comprises a timer and a stem-striking means for periodically impacting the stem member, and a container having an opening encircling and enclosing a portion of the stem member. In one aspect of the present invention there is provided a novel method for entrapping fire ants in a container, which is essentially a use of the aforesaid fire ant trap. This new method comprises the steps of; inserting a prong in a fire ant mound; vibrating slightly the prong for provoking the ants in that mound and for defensively urging these ants to climb the prong; encircling a portion of the prong in the container; periodically shaking that portion of the prong for dislodging the ants therefrom, and for causing these ants to fall into the container; and closing the container entrapping the ants thereinto.

Le piège à fournis comprend aussi un dispositif d'actionnement monté sur le support. Le dispositif d'actionnement comporte un élément en saillie relié à la branche à une première extrémité et formant une tige à la deuxième extrémité. Le dispositif d'actionnement comporte aussi une minuterie et un dispositif servant à secouer périodiquement la tige, et un contenant comportant un orifice encerclant et entourant la tige. Un aspect de la présente invention consiste en une méthode novatrice pour piéger des fourmis dans un contenant, ce qui constitue essentiellement l'utilisation dudit piège à fourmis. Cette nouvelle méthode comporte les étapes suivantes : insérer une branche dans une fourmilière; faire vibrer légèrement la branche pour provoquer une réaction chez les fourmis logées dans la fourmilière et pour les inciter à grimper sur la branche; encercler une partie de la branche dans le contenant; secouer périodiquement la partie de la branche pour en déloger les fourmis et les faire tomber dans le contenant; fermer le contenant de manière à piéger les fourmis.
