ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A fire escape device permanently attached to the exterior wall of a building including a vertical tube fixed to the wall and having a front vertically extending slot, a round post rotatably mounted in said tube and having a helical groove at its peripheral surface exposed through said slot, and a person supporting harness device guided for vertical movement along the tube and having a tongue projecting through the slot into engagement with the groove. The escaping person's weight causes rotation of the post while descending. A brake system slows down the post to an accept- able speed of descent.
