A fire-extinguishing powder composition comprising (a) from 10% to 90% of at least one allophonate selected from potassium allophonate and sodium allophonate, and (b) from 90% to 10% of an alkali metal compound selected from carbonates, bicarbonates and sulphates having fire-extinguishing properties, the percentages being by weight of the total of (a) and (b). A method of extinguishing fires with the composition and a fire-fighting appliance comprising the composition are also disclosed.
