ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Fire protection means are described for confined spaces such as fuel storage tanks, and bays adjacent such tanks. A blend of heterofil and homofil fibers are fused to form a structure, ie are melded. The homofil fibers can be up to 200 denier, while the heterofil are up to 30 denier. The structure can have 4-12 pores per linear centimetre, with the fibers occupying less than 4% of the volume of the confined space. The blend of fibers enables the structure to have some rigidity. In one form acrylic fibers can be used, and in a preferred embodiment, the structure is reticulated, comprising a ball of polymeric fibers. In that embodiment the fibers might occupy less than 2% of the total volume occupied by the balls if the latter are packed in a race-centred cubic array. Fire protective hollow tubes and blocks can also be used.
