A fire retardant comprising 100 parts by weight of a metal hydroxide and 0.1 to 50 parts by weight of an acrylic fiber, and a fire-retardant resin composition comprising 20 to 80 % by weight of a synthetic resin or rubber, 80 to 20 % by weight of a metal hydroxide and 0.1 to 10 parts by weight, based on 100 parts by weight of the synthetic resin or rubber and the metal hydroxide in total, of an acrylic fiber. The present composition has improved fire retardancy free from degradation in mechanical strength and deterioration of water resistance, and the present fire retardant permits free coloring and releases no toxic smoke.
