FIRE RETARDANT, STABLE AQUEOUS POLYMER LATICES ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Non-burning and self-extinguishing polymer composi- tions in the form of a latex comprising (1) a halogen-contain- ing ethylenically unsaturated monomer, (2) a bis(hydrocarbyl) vinyl phosphonate, (3) at least one third comonomer such as a C1-C20 alkyl acrylate and/or N-methylol acrylamide. These latices are prepared by an emulsion polymerization process in which the emulsifier is a sulfosuccinamate such as tetra- sodium N-(1,2-dicarboxyethyl)-N-octadecyl sulfosuccinamate or disodium N-octadecyl sulfosuccinamate. The polymer latices of this invention display a high degree of latex stability and flame retardance and are useful in a variety of applications including coatings, binders, adhesives, impregnants, laminants and paint bases.
