ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A fire starting compound consisting of a dry absorbent combustible mass impregnated by an oxidizing agent. The fire starting compound is prepared by the following method. Firstly, dilute a granular form oxidizing agent in an evaporable inert liquid carrier to form a liquid mixture. Secondly, impregnate an absorbent combustible mass with the liquid mixture. Thirdly, dry the impregnated combustible mass to evaporate the inert liquid carrier thereby obtaining an oxidizing agent impregnated dry combustible mass which is suitable for use as a fire starting compound.
