A fire suppression system for a mining machine including a movable mining machine, such as a continuous miner, a hose attached to the continuous miner and a thermally actuated valve in fluid communication with the hose. The thermally actuated valve is normally closed unless it is heated above an activation temperature in which case the thermally actuated valve is in an open position. A nozzle is provided in fluid communication with the thermally actuated valve through a conduit. A pressure switch or a flow switch is provided in fluid communication with the conduit and is coupled to a controller which indicates if water is flowing through the second conduit. This information can be displayed on a monitor.
