A ballistic projectile containment device includes a housing, a sleeve mounted in the housing to thereby define a cavity, and swatches of ballistic material filling the cavity to an effective thickness. The housing may be an elongate housing having a longitudinal axis and only one open end so as to define a cavity opening from the open end and extending into the housing. The sleeve may be a substantially rigid, hollow sleeve having only one opening, the sleeve mounted into the open end and extending into the cavity along the longitudinal axis. The sleeve is sized smaller than the cavity so as to define a ballistic material receiving portion of the cavity between the sleeve and the housing. The ballistic material receiving portion of the cavity is filled with unbonded swatches of ballistic material and of sufficient depth parallel to the longitudinal axis so as to contain within the housing a ballistic projectile fired into the sleeve from a weapon held substantially within an opening of the sleeve and aligned relative to the sleeve so as to align a trajectory of the fired projectile substantially parallel with the longitudinal axis.
