ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Novel polymer-supported metal complexes of the formula: Image - R Me(CO)nHm where: Image represents a divinylbenzene crosslinked polystyrene in which the divinylbenzene crosslinking is greater than 1% and less than about 18%; R represents a cycloalkadienyl radical of 4 through 6 carbon atoms; Me represents a Group VIII metal; CO represents a carbonyl radical; H represents hydrogen; n represents an integer varying from 0 through 3; m represents an integer varying from 0 through 2 in- clusively with the further provision that 2n + m must total 18 when added to the electrons in R and Me, or n + m must total 0; are prepared by: brominating Image - H by treating same with bromine in the presence of a thallium salt in a partially or fully halo- genated solvent to form Image - Br; treating said Image - Br so produced with a lithium alkyl of 1 through 12 carbon atoms in an aromatic solvent to produce Image - Li; substituting said Image - Li so produced by reaction with a 2-cycloalkenone of 4 to 6 carbon atoms in the presence of an ether solvent and using a water work-up to form a cycloalkenyl- alcohol-substituted Image ; dehydrating said alcohol so produced by heating under a vacuum to produce a cycloalkadienyl-substituted Image ; reacting the cycloalkadienyl-substituted Image with metal carbonyl in the presence of a partially or fully halogenated hydrocarbon, aromatic hydrocarbon of 6 through 8 carbon atoms, ethers, or esters of 4 through 10 carbon atoms as a solvent to produce a polystyrene-supported cycloalkadienyl metal carbonyl. The novel compounds are used as improved Fischer- Tropsch catalysts particularly for the conversion of CO + H2 to gaseous and liquid hydrocarbons at milder conditions than with prior catalysts.
