A fishing accessory comprises a base and a bracket pivotally mounted on the base, for retaining a fishing rod in position. The bracket is movable to enable the rod to be displaced from an armed position to a rest position, thereby performing a striking action. An elastic member is connected between the bracket and the base and is held in an extended position by means of an over-centre mechanism when the rod is in the armed position. The over-centre mechanism is activated when a pulling force is exerted on a fishing line attached to the rod, thereby releasing the elastic member to displace the rod to perform the striking action.
