ABSTRACT This invention is directed to a fishing reel which includes a casing equipped to be mounted on a fishing rod and a spigot-like formation extending from the casing in a direction substantially normal to a longitudinal axis of the fishing rod. The spigot-like formation is rotatably mounted about a shaft which in turn is rotatably mounted in the casing. A spool, mounted on the spigot-like formation, is rotatable with the spigot-like formation. Control means are mounted within the casing for controlling the operation of the spigot-like formation.
