A fishing weight is provided for a fishing line having a hook supported thereon. The fishing weight includes a carrier for attachment to the fishing line and a latch member on the carrier. The latch member is movable between a closed position forming a closed aperture for securing the fishing line therethrough and an open position in which the aperture is opened permitting the fishing line to be released therefrom. Opening the latch member requires exertion of a force which exceeds a prescribed latching force of the carrier. A weighted member is suspended from the carrier by a release mechanism such that the weighted member is selectively separable from the carrier for replacement thereof with different weights.
