ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A fixed bed catalyst is described, comprising activated carbon fibers and an active catalyst component or components deposited thereon wherein the activated carbon fibers are formed in a structure in which they are interwined with each other and which has such a high space-retention force as to maintain a bulk density of 0.2 g/cm3 or less at a compression load of at least 1 kg/cm2. This fixed bed catalyst allows a fluid to pass therethrough smoothly and maintains an increased contact area between the fluid and the catalyst.
