A cutting head for rotary trimmers in which two relatively short fixed lengths of flexible cutting line (22) are inserted into opposed channels (44) in the head and are secured in place by a pair of spring biased toothed cams (16). Each of the cams is pivotally mounted on a post (36) within the housing adjacent one of the channels and defines a curvilinear camming surface having a plurality of uniformly spaced teeth (50) thereon that project into the channels at increasing angles of inclination from the outermost tooth to the innermost tooth for engaging the line. A pair of torsion springs (18) bias the cams to pivot on their mounting teeth such that the backsides of the teeth are continually urged toward the openings to the channels thereby allowing line to be inserted inwardly into the head past the toothed cams but retained by the cams against any outwardly directed forces acting on the line. The cams are symmetrically balanced about their axes of rotation so as to be unaffected by centrifugal force acting thereon during use.

Chaque came est montée pivotante sur une barre (36) à l'intérieur d'un logement adjacent à un des canaux, et définit une surface de coincement curviligne qui présente une pluralité de dents (50) espacées uniformément faisant saillie dans les canaux à des angles d'inclinaison augmentant de la dent la plus à l'extérieur jusqu'à la dent la plus à l'intérieur afin d'entrer en contact avec ledit fil. Une paire de ressorts de torsion (18) sollicitent les cames afin que celles-ci pivotent sur leurs dents de montage, de façon que les côtés latéraux des dents soient pressés en continu vers les ouvertures des canaux, ce qui permet d'insérer le fil vers l'intérieur dans la tête au-delà des cames dentées, celui-ci étant toutefois retenu par les cames contre toutes forces dirigées vers l'extérieur agissant sur le fil. Les cames sont équilibrées de manière symétrique autour de leurs axes de rotation, de façon à ne pas subir la force centrifuge agissant à cet endroit en cours d'utilisation.
