1. A flame retardant having excellent resistance to water and acid for a long period of time and comprising 100 parts by weight of magnesium hydroxide of which the surface is treated with a phosphoric ester of formula (I) (see fig. I) wherein R represents an alkyl or alkenyl group having 10 to 30 carbon atoms, M represents an atom belonging to group IA of the periodic table or NH4+, and n represents 1 or 2, and 0.1 to 10 parts by weight of a salt of a metal other than alkali metals with a higher fatty acid, and a resin composition containig said flame retardant.

Ignifugeant offrant une excellente résistance à l'eau et aux acides pendant une période de temps prolongée, renfermant :100 parties en poids d'hydroxyde de magnésium, dont la surface est traitée avec un ester phosphorique de formule I (voir fig. I), où R représente un groupe alkyle ou alcényle, de 10 à 30 atomes de carbone, M représente un atome du groupe IA du tableau périodique ou NH4+, et n est 1 ou 2; 0,1 à 10 parties en poids d'un sel de métal non alcalin avec un acide gras supérieur. Composition à base de résine renfermant ledit ignifugeant.
