A novel flame retardant which imparts a high degree of flame retardancy even when added in a small amount, is inexpensive, and has no atoms of halogens, phosphorus, nitrogen, etc. The flame retardant comprises a polymer which has a skeleton consisting of silicon, boron, and oxygen and substantially constituted of silicon-oxygen bonds and boron-oxygen bonds and has aromatic rings in the molecule. The flame-retardant resin composition comprises 100 parts by weight of a resin and 0.1 to 50 parts by weight of the flame retardant.
Ce nouvel ignifugeant, à haut pouvoir ignifuge même s'il n'est présent qu'en petite quantité, est peu coûteux et ne comporte pas, de plus, d'atomes de substances halogènes, de phosphore ni d'azote, etc. Cet ignifugeant contient un polymère dont le squelette est constitué de silicium, de bore et d'oxygène et il est essentiellement constitué de liaisons silicium oxygène, sa molécule possédant des noyaux aromatiques. La composition ignifuge à base de résine comprend 100 parties en poids d'une résine et de 1 à 50 parties en poids de l'ignifugeant.
