ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Flame-retardant elastomers are prepared by adding a metal hy- droxide and/or a hydrate of a metal oxide e.g. alumina trihydrate, ceric hydroxide, cerous hydroxide, tricalcium aluminate hexahydrate, magnesium hydroxide and mixtures thereof and graphite e.g. having a surface area of 3-15 m2/g to an organopolysiloxane composition which is capable of being cross-linked to form an elastomer. These elastomers have better flame- retardant and self-extinguishing properties than the elastomers known heretofore. They exhibit higher tensile strength and better resistance to tear propagation than elastomers obtained from previously known com- positions.
