ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A flame retardant polycarbonate composition comprising in admixture an aromatic carbonate polymer and a flame retardant additive an alkali or alkaline earth metal salt, of a sulfonic acid wherein the sulfonic acid group is attached to a non-aromatic carbon atom. Desirably the hydrocarbyl radical of the sulfonic acid is substituted by electronegative groups. Thermoplastic articles in conformity with the standard of UL-94 Burning Test grade SE-O can be prepared. Translucent or transparent articles result when the refractive index of the additive is in the range of 1.54 to 1.65.
