PATENTS 60SI-1526 ABSTRACT A synergistic flame retardant system having a halogenated aromatic di-ester and platinum is added to a heat curable rubber composition to improve extinguishing times and minimal char formation. When used in conjunction with platinum, brominated aromatic diols and brominated aromatic esters particularly increase the flame retardancy when added to a polyorganosiloxane heat curable rubber composition. The halogenated aromatic di-ester has four halogen atoms substituted on the aromatic ring, a COOR1 group and a COOR2 group, wherein each halogen may be the same as or different than the others, R1 is selected from a hydrocarbon having 1-20 carbon atoms, an ether, and an alkenyl group having 2-20 carbon atoms, and R2 is selected from a hydrocarbon having 1-20 carbon atoms, an ether, and an alkenyl group having 2-20 carbon atoms. If either R1 or R2 is an ether, it preferably has a formula -R3-O-R4- wherein R3 is a hydrocarbon chain having 1-20 carbon atoms, and R4 is a hydrocarbon chain having 1-20 carbon atoms.
