A flange assembly for joining together housing sections having a resilient diaphragm element disposed therebetween. The flange assembly is comprised of a first flange on a first housing section having a first compression surface and a second flange on a second housing section adapted to be joined with the first flange. The second flange is formed of a deformable metal and has a second compression surface facing the first compression surface and a flange extension dimensioned to wrap around the peripheral edge of the first flange and to be crimped thereon. A spacing element is disposed on the peripheral edge of the first flange between the first and second flanges to maintain a predetermined spacing between the first compression surface and the second compression surface. The spacing is slightly less than the thickness of the resilient diaphragm element so as to compress and seal same between the compression surfaces. The flange extension is crimped onto the first flange such that the surface contact betweenthe flange extension and the first flange is primarily in the vicinity of the spacing element.
