A flanged optical connector is described, which provides stability to an optical connector positioned inside an optical signal propagation unit. The flanged optical connector includes an optical adapter that carries an optical fiber, and an outer shell. The outer shell is slidably mounted on the optical adapter, and includes a flange that rigidly mounts the optical connector to an inside facing of the optical signal propagation unit, e. g. , at a faceplate thereof. With this structure, the adapter can be readily removed from the exterior of the optical signal propagation unit, which provides quick, direct access to the inner optical fiber for cleaning. Furthermore, remounting of the adapter can be readily and quickly performed. Thus, the process of cleaning the inner optical fiber can be easily and quickly performed.
