A learning device comprises a receptacle (5) for holding an information bearing card (10). The information bearing cards (10) include a problem and a coded answer. The receptacle (5) of the learning device includes a decoding display window (40) with a movable writing screen (65) which may be moved to cover or uncover the decoding display window (40). The user can insert the information bearing cards (10) into the receptacle (5), write down a response on the writing screen (90) with the display window (40) covered, and compare their response with the correct answer by moving the movable writing screen (65) to reveal the decoded answer through the decoding display window (40).
