ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An automatic exposure control system for a document copying machine is provided which includes a flash illumination system, a light intensity sensor positioned to directly view the document to be copied, and an illumina- tion control means operatively associated with the sensor to control the amount of energy supplied to the illumination system in response to the energy of the sensed reflected light from the document.
