2072879 9110105 PCTABS00006 A method and corresponding apparatus for improving the control and efficiency of a combustion reaction in a flash smelting furnace (10), by introducing a mixture of a first oxidizing gas (26) with combustible and noncombustible solid particles (24) into a flass smelting furnace (10), to burn in a first flame portion to provide for the smelting of the solid particles (24), burning an auxiliary fuel (32) and a second oxidizing gas (34) to create a second flame portion surrounding the first flame portion, controlling the flow of oxidizing gases and auxiliary fuel to provide a temperature gradient between the first flame and second flame portion for maintaining a desired temperature of the particles leaving the flame envelope during the first stage of smelting.
