A guide plate (32) on the head (28) of the flashlight (20) provides an alignment feature which aligns a pair of flashlight charging contacts (34, 36) with a pair of terminals (52, 54) in charging unit (40) for releasably holding the flashlight (20) in its charging receptacle (40). The flashlight (20) is held within the charging receptable (40) in a consistent orientation, so that the flashlight switch may be easily found when the flashlight (20) is grasped. The charging receptacle (40) grips the head portion (28) of the flashlight (20) with a pair of spring-loaded jaws (46). A battery assembly (100) is provided which presents both positive and negative terminals (104, 102) at the forward end of the battery unit (100). Connections (106, 108) are made from the forward end of the battery (100) to an interconnection module (90) within the flashlight head assembly (28).
