ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Disclosed herein are flatted water-reducible coating compositions of the varnish, paint or enamel types, which com- positions comprise a water-miscible film forming resin, water as the predominant solvent and a particulate finely-divided silica flatting agent. The method of the invention involves the initial production of a mull paste formulation containing the film forming resin followed by a let-down step employing water as the predominant solvent. The silica flatting agent is introduced into the composition as an aqueous dispersion thereof during or after said let-down step. -2-
