ABSTRACT Flexible electrical interconnect pads (30, 64, 65, 72), located between bulky electrical components and a printed circuit board (18), provide electrical interconnects between the bulky electrical component and the printed circuit board. Specifically, these pads electrically interconnect microphones, earphones (52), back lighting devices (42) of liquid crystal displays, and modular connectors (24) to substrate contacts on a printed circuit board. Each flexible electrical interconnect pad is fabricated from an elastomeric material having a plurality of electrical elements (63, 67) embedded therein which provide an electrical interconnection between the bulky electrical component and the printed circuit board. A plurality of detents (14) and catches on a top and bottom shell (12, 16) of the handset or tabs (46) of an enclosure provide the necessary force which, when snapped together or twisted, respectively, compresses the flexible electrical interconnect pad between the bulky electrical component and the printed circuit board. This ensures that the electrical elements within the interconnect pad contact both the bulky component and the printed circuit board and provide a robust electrical interconnection therebetween.
