A flip-out key assembly includes a case, a cover mounted on the case, enclosing at least a portion of the case, and a key having a grip portion located within the enclosed portion of the case and mounted on a pivot, allowing the key to be pivoted between a stored position in which a blade portion of the key is located within a key pocket which extends along the case between first and second ends of the case, and a use position in which the blade portion projects outwardly from the first end of the case. A key release member is axially movable between a first position in which the key release member prevents pivoting of the key, maintaining the key in the stored position, and a second position in which the key can be pivoted to the use position. The axis of the key release member is offset with respect to the pivot axis of the key. The key release member has an open region to accommodate pivoting movement of the key.
