An apparatus for cleaning a ball. The apparatus includes a first accelerator, a second accelerator, a director, a brush, a submerger, a guide, and an ejector. The first accelerator accelerates a ball and any foreign objects associated therewith along a path to impart linear momentum thereto, the linear momentum being in a first direction. The second accelerator accelerates the ball in a second direction to abruptly change the path of the ball while permitting the foreign objects to proceed generally in the first direction due to their associated linear momentum in the first direction, thereby causing the paths of the ball and the foreign objects to diverge to effect separation of the foreign objects from the ball. The director directs the ball into a cleaning fluid. The brush is disposed in the cleaning fluid and the submerger cooperates with the brush to submerge the ball in the cleaning fluid against buoyancy forces while brushing the ball with the brush. The guide cooperates with the submerger to guide the ball to the surface of the cleaning fluid after the submerger has acted upon the ball, the ball being accelerated upward to the surface by the buoyancy forces. The ejector ejects the ball from the apparatus.
