A floating hinge device for a sectional door provides both a pivotal connection and a slidingly yieldable connection between adjacent panels of the door. The pivotal connection allows the panels of the door to pivot relative to each other as they travel along a set of lateral tracks that curve between horizontal and vertical sections. As with a conventional garage door, the panels move to the vertical sections of track to close the door and move to the horizontal sections to store overhead when the door opens. If an impact from a vehicle or something else causes one panel to move more than an adjacent one, the slidingly yieldable connection allows relative movement between the two panels, thereby minimizing strain to the hinge and to the two panels. In some embodiments, the yieldable connection is provided by an adaptor plate that allows the use of a conventional door hinge. In some embodiments, the lowest panel is more flexible and more impact resistant than the other panels of the door.
