A floating, self-centering impeller (12) for a turbine pump assembly (10) has a plurality of "D-shaped" recesses (49) arranged in one or more annular rows on its side surfaces (44, 44a) to induce pressurized film between its side surfaces and adjacent thrust surfaces (54, 54a) of liners (16, 18) to prevent galling or seizing of the pump as the impeller is rotated. A corresponding array of such "D-shaped" recesses may be provided on the opposing surfaces of the liners.
